A Less Familiar History

Site-specific installation, video 04:55 (loop).

Commissioned for Photo España 2016, A Less Familiar History revealed on the surface of the Biblioteca Nacional de España for one evening only a living history that has modestly co-existed within the building since it’s foundation in 1712.  The work was made by collecting samples of biological material found mostly in and around the National Library of Spain, which were grown under "kitchen laboratory" conditions and then filmed using a DSLR camera, Olympus CKX41 and Nikon Eclipse 50i microscopes, courtesy of the School of Marine Science & Technology at Newcastle University.  The resulting film, combining footage from all samples, was projection mapped onto the exterior surface of the central façade of the library.

Made in collaboration with Biblioteca Nacional de España, Madrid
